Land Rate Payments
A land rate is an annual levy imposed on all parcels of land in Kenya and payable to the respective county governments. It is calculated based on the current market value of the land. Upon full payment of all rates, one is issued with the land rate clearance certificate. County governments charge different amounts for the land rates.
The value of land increases as it gets serviced water, sewage system, street lights and improved roadways. These factors increase the value of land and simultaneously tax rates increase.
To avoid having to incur penalties and interests imposed by the county government for failure to pay your land rate and rent, it is important to make payment in time usually at the beginning of the year as per the invoices issued to you by the Ministry of Lands and City Council, respectively.
